Use simple tools and techniques to create healthy garden soil in a former lawn area. Part of an ongoing series on Home-Scale gardening.

Learn by doing. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate:

  • Solarization of soil to naturally kill weeds and weed seed
  • Soil sampling and how to read a soil test
  • Using tillage and natural amendments to jump-start soil life
  • Cover cropping and termination of cover crops
  • Initial bed construction, with tarping and other seedbed-prep techniques
  • Swale construction and other water-catchment/ mitigation earthwork techniques

Part 1. Initial Briefing:

Tour of gardens we'll be working in with introduction to objectives

Part 2. Guided Hands-on Session:

Practice above techniques in 3 garden areas, revolving groups

Part 3. Farm Nosh + Debriefing:
