From the Garden - First week of June 2020

#eatlocalyall

Hi, Neighbor!

Our large brassicas are beginning to come in, although they are not so large... We're hopeful for a few nice cabbages to share, but we'll probably only get a meal or two's worth of cauliflower. We will have broccoli leaves or collard greens as one of the braising options in our CSA kit this week, and the broccoli crowns will be reserved for Farmshare members first. If there are any left this week, they'll be available at our Thursday drop or in our Friday store update.

Fruit news: We are still picking fresh strawberries this week and the blackberries are loaded and starting to turn. Newly-planted red raspberries and blackberries are looking strong for next year.

This is our last week starting lettuce plants till we cycle thru summer. Lettuce will still be available (tho in ever-reducing quantities) thru mid-July. We'll probably see the kale and chard taper off to about that time as well. Collards should hold strong thru summer, if we can keep them safe from bugs!
For summer veg: Okra, green beans, squash, and tomatoes are coming along, but our cukes are struggling. We are still focusing on winter storage crops, in preparation for a potentially rough winter for food access. We're on our 3rd succession of winter squash plants, and our sweet potato slips are almost ready for planting. We do have a few winter squash plants we could share, so if you have the space to plant one or five, please let us know and we'll do what we can to help you.
We've also planted out MANY new and exciting medicinal herbs, and are increasing our capacity to harvest culinary herbs as well.
This is all helped by bringing 4 new gardens online this summer:
A great big thank-you to the Acetos, the Powells, The Willises, and Gene (dad)!!!

For fresh flowers: If you are a neighborhood resident or CoOp member, you are welcome to cut your own flowers again this week own at no charge. Please stick to the right-of-ways, and ask Rob or Melanie if you are unsure about how to do... Our premade bouquets will be available for sale at our market stands only.

Fresh food this week includes mushrooms, spring mix, kale, chard, baby choy, radish, and carrots.

Townelake customers can still get (awesome) service by visiting us at Nature's Corner on Thursdays, and DTW customers can do the same at the Saturday market!
